Want to read more? Planning a trip soon? Travelling is an amazing time to start reading and picking up this great hobby that has so many benefits for us.
Why traveling is the best time to start reading?
Reading is not always easy, even for the most skilled readers out there. there are times that I just can’t read, not even one page. your mind is just all over the place and can’t concentrate on the lines in front of you.
I’ve come to realize that while traveling, people, including me, read more. Sure, it’s because you have a lot of free time, but it’s not just that. Travelling is the best time to start reading, because your mind is calm and relaxed, with no pressures around you, so you can focus for hours, getting lost in the story and completely forget about everything else.
Why start reading?
Most of us have read at least one book in our life, or at least tried. Usually it’s either you love reading or can’t stand it. But even if you think you belong to the second group, you have to give it a second chance. Here are some reasons for you to start reading:
Our mind is very busy all the time with many thoughts. Most of live in a fast-paced environment and never stop for a moment to focus on one thing and to free our mind from the daily routine.
Reading is an amazing way to stop, forget for a second about our daily stress and lose yourself to a great story. It is amazing how an engaging article will distract you and keep you in the present moment, letting tensions and stress go away.
When reading a book, you have to focus and remember so many details. The characters, places, colors, times, situations, and many other small things taking place in the story.
At the beginning it is not easy but then you will start feeling that it is much easier for you to remember everything, that’s because your memory is improving.
Improving focus and concentration
We live in a crazy world. There are so many distractions out there that our attention is taken away in a second. Focus and concentration is a big problem in our generation and many people suffer from it. Reading definitely improves our focus and concentration which will lead to better productivity, keeping us satisfied and happy.
Imagine – Let yourself be a child again
The best thing about reading is that it opens your mind and extend your imagination. It’s like when we were kids, playing pretend with our friends, we could really see in our mind the things we imagined.
Sometimes reading a book is so detailed that you can feel like you are part of the story, picturing yourself as one of the main characters or even just the scene. Really see everything in your mind, like watching a film inside your head.
Imagining is amazing, especially today because we don’t let our mind wander anymore, and everything is already given to us without any need of creativity.
Getting to know new people
While we are traveling, especially by ourselves, we are always looking for ways to meet new people. Books are definitely a good way to meet new people while traveling.
In almost every town you can find a coffee place for exchanging books, you can ask for recommendations from the people there, which is a nice way to start a chat with a stranger. It’s also a lot better for the environment then buying a new one.
Books are always a good topic for starting a conversation, if you see a person reading a book that you heard of or even read before, you can easily say something about the book. Usually from my experience people love talking about books they are reading, it’s a great way of processing it.
Tip for beginners
Ok so you never read a book, except in high school and even then it was a summary? First of all don’t forget you are probably doing a lot of reading already in your phone every day, but if you are interested in switching it to books than this tip is for you. The best tip I can give you is to think of a famous movie you liked and look it up! Chances are it started as a book, and it is probably better than the movie. I also recommend starting with a book that is not too long, and divided to short chapters. It will be easier to stick with the reading if you will read one or two short chapters a day.
Take a look at the list I have put at the bottom of my favorite ones for some inspiration.
